On behalf of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (MKRI), Constitutional Justices Wahiduddin Adams and Suhartoyo visited the Constitutional Court of Jordan Sunday, December 5, 2021 to follow up on cooperation plans between the two institutions, which would be confirmed by a memorandum of understanding (MoU). They had previously discussed the forms of cooperation that would be included in the MoU. The Jordanian Constitutional Court was represented by Constitutional Justices Tagreed Hikmat, Mohammed Al Dweib, and Fayez Hamarneh.
Starting the discussion, Justice Wahiduddin congratulated the Constitutional Court of Jordan for having inducted into the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions (AACC) as its first Arabian member state. Countries in the Arab world have first founded the Union of Arab Constitutional Courts & Councils (UACCC). The AACC and the UACCC’s memberships are open, allowing its members to join similar associations. The Jordanian Constitutional Court participation in the AACC and the UACCC shows its wish to participate in the international judicial communities. “The active participation of the Jordanian Constitutional Court deserves appreciation,” Justice Wahiduddin said.
Justice Tagreed Hikmat welcomed MKRI’s delegation on behalf of her Court and expressed that it was an honor to do so. The Constitutional Court of Jordan, founded in 2012, is a newer body compared to MKRI.
“Therefore, exchanging information and experience is crucial for the Jordanian Constitutional Court in order to strengthen the implementation of its judicial authorities and administrative management,” she added. The MKRI’s delegation’s visit to the Jordanian Constitutional Court proved to be a valuable opportunity for this.
At the meeting, both delegations talked about the justice selection procedure, the Courts’ authorities, the case resolution mechanisms, and the role of research in supporting the constitutional justices in resolving cases. Justice Suhartoyo also mentioned the thousands of cases that MKRI had handled. The Constitutional Court of Jordan especially showed interest in this, as it has not handled as many cases.
Constitutional Justices Wahiduddin Adams and Suhartoyo also met with President of Constitutional Court of Jordan Hisham Al Tal. They personally invited him to attend the fifth congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice (WCCJ) that MKRI will host next year. President Al Tal expressed that insha Allah (God willing), he would be attending.
